SMU posts modest Q2 2026 profit decline despite revenue growth
Steel manufacturer SMU reported a slight drop in quarterly profit for Q2 2026 even as revenue edged higher, according to a transcript of its earnings call.

Steel Dynamics Inc. (SMU) posted modest revenue growth in the second quarter of 2026 but saw a decline in profit, according to a transcript of its earnings call.
The company reported a 2% increase in revenue year-over-year, driven by higher shipments and pricing in its flat-rolled steel segment. However, net income fell by approximately 5% to $345 million, reflecting higher raw material costs and operational expenses.
Chief Executive Officer Mark Millett attributed the profit decline to elevated scrap metal prices and logistical challenges. "We continue to navigate a volatile input cost environment," Millett said during the call. "While demand remains stable, margin compression persists due to rising expenses."
SMU maintained its full-year 2026 guidance, reaffirming expectations for adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) in the range of $1.4 billion to $1.5 billion. The company also highlighted ongoing investments in automation and sustainability initiatives to improve long-term efficiency.
Analysts noted that the results were in line with expectations, with consensus estimates pointing to a slight contraction in margins. The steelmaker’s shares were little changed in after-hours trading following the release of the call transcript.
