The Swiss Market Index (SMI) closed Friday with a modest gain of 0.1% at 14,399.8 points, after fluctuating within a 75-point range between a daily high of 14,457 and a low of 14,382.
A majority of 15 of the 20 SMI components ended higher, led by Richemont (+1.8%), UBS (+1.7%) and Givaudan (+1.5%), which benefited from sustained positive sector momentum. Financial heavyweights diverged, with UBS (+1.7%), Swiss Re (+0.9%) and Zurich Insurance (+0.5%) outperforming, while Swiss pharma giants weighed on the index: Roche fell 1.5%, Alcon declined 1.0% and Lonza dropped 0.8%.
Among the blue chips, Nestlé eked out a marginal gain of 0.1% following Thursday’s losses, while Novartis slipped 0.7%. The broad market impact was amplified by Roche’s participatory shares, which shed 1.5%, exerting notable downward pressure on the index.
Corporate earnings announcements drove significant single-stock volatility. Cie Financière Tradition surged 6.8% after detailing first-half results, while Vetropack climbed 5.3% and Ems-Chemie advanced 3.2%. Accelleron also gained 3.2% following positive analyst commentary tied to its prior-day figures.
Conversely, Flughafen Zürich tumbled 7.7% after failing to meet profitability expectations, while Idorsia fell 7.2%, Stadler Rail declined 3.6% and Jungfraubahn dropped 1.0%.
Sentiment was tempered by hawkish remarks from U.S. Federal Reserve policymaker Kevin Warsh at the Jackson Hole symposium, which revived concerns over additional interest-rate hikes if inflation proves persistent.
