S&P 500 CEO pay hits record on Musk compensation deals
Median CEO compensation rose to $16.3 million in 2024, driven by Tesla awards linked to Elon Musk's pay package, S&P 500 data shows.

Median CEO compensation across S&P 500 companies reached a record $16.3 million in 2024, fueled by large equity awards tied to Tesla’s performance and Elon Musk’s compensation deals, according to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence.
The increase marks a 10% rise from the prior year, reversing a two-year decline in CEO pay levels. Tesla’s board approved a $56 billion compensation package for Musk in 2018, structured around stock awards tied to the company’s market capitalization and operational milestones. The package, approved by shareholders in 2022, has since driven significant portions of Tesla’s equity-based compensation for executives.
While Tesla’s compensation model remains an outlier, broader trends in S&P 500 CEO pay reflect a shift toward performance-based equity awards. Companies are increasingly aligning executive pay with long-term shareholder value, particularly in technology and high-growth sectors. The median total compensation for S&P 500 CEOs in 2023 was $14.8 million, according to the latest available data.
The rise in CEO pay comes amid broader debates over executive compensation and income inequality. Critics argue that outsized pay packages, particularly in the tech sector, exacerbate wealth disparities. Proponents counter that performance-linked awards incentivize innovation and growth, benefiting shareholders.
S&P Global Market Intelligence’s report highlights that the top 10% of S&P 500 CEOs earned an average of $50.3 million in 2024, nearly triple the median. The disparity underscores the concentration of wealth among top executives in large corporations.
The data does not include private companies or firms outside the S&P 500 index.
