Analysts attribute Bitcoin’s recent breakout from its trading range to regulatory developments in the United States rather than broader macroeconomic concerns. The view contrasts with traditional narratives linking Bitcoin’s price movements to currency devaluation or inflation hedging, with price action lagging behind the U.S. Treasury’s buyback announcement and Ether outperforming Bitcoin in the rally.
Gautam Chhugani, senior analyst at Bernstein, highlighted the U.S. Treasury’s decision to buy back longer-term bonds as a key catalyst. Chhugani noted that prior market apathy toward crypto stemmed from tightening conditions following geopolitical tensions and a shift of liquidity into AI and semiconductor stocks. However, as AI investments increasingly tap debt markets, expanded liquidity could redirect toward Bitcoin as a hedge.
Todd Ault, founder of Ault Blockchain, emphasized the significance of regulatory momentum, particularly President Trump’s endorsement of the CLARITY Act. The legislation, slated for a vote on September 15, is seen as a pivotal step for U.S. cryptocurrency adoption. Ault stated that the market is beginning to recognize the potential long-term impact of this regulatory shift.
Ether’s stronger performance relative to Bitcoin was attributed to its exposure to stablecoins, tokenization, and real-world asset adoption, according to Chhugani. Bernstein’s data showed Bitcoin ETF outflows peaked between May and June at approximately $7 billion, roughly 10% of assets under management. By August 20, inflows had reached $1.1 billion, bringing total ETF assets to over $85 billion, up from $70 billion in June.
Bernstein also noted that Strategy’s cash reserves currently cover 2.8 years of dividend payments, with Bitcoin sales limited to 0.8% of total holdings to support STRC buybacks. The firm expects to resume Bitcoin purchases as the nominal value of STRC approaches $100.
Citi analysts cautioned that the sustainability of Bitcoin’s rally hinges on whether sentiment reverses the stagnation in ETF inflows observed since October. The bank’s baseline scenario assumes zero net ETF flows, citing long-term uncertainty over value accrual if activity shifts toward private blockchains.
