Qatar and Iran engaged in high-level discussions on Thursday regarding a phased framework that includes the creation of a temporary joint shipping corridor through the Strait of Hormuz, involving Oman.
During a visit to Tehran by Qatar’s prime minister, the two nations also reviewed an agreement to collaborate on clearing mines from the strategic waterway. The proposed corridor would operate under a phased implementation plan, according to officials cited in the talks.
Both countries emphasized efforts to reduce regional tensions and foster conditions conducive to dialogue. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments, has been a focal point of maritime security concerns in recent years.
The discussions follow broader regional diplomatic efforts aimed at stabilizing shipping lanes and mitigating risks to commercial traffic in the Persian Gulf.
