Portugal’s PSI index slipped 0.38% to close at 6,421.72 on Wednesday, paring earlier gains as financial and industrial stocks weighed on broader sentiment.
The blue-chip PSI-20, which tracks the 20 largest listed companies by market capitalization, ended 0.41% lower at 3,214.89. Financial heavyweights Millennium BCP and Banco BPI both retreated more than 1%, while energy group Galp Energia pared earlier advances to finish flat.
Traders cited profit-taking after a recent rally in Portuguese equities, which have gained roughly 5% over the past month on optimism over domestic growth and tourism recovery. Volume totaled 52.3 million euros, below the 30-day average of 68.4 million euros, suggesting limited conviction in either direction.
The broader European equity complex showed mixed signals, with the Euro Stoxx 50 up 0.1% and Germany’s DAX down 0.2%. The Portuguese market’s underperformance reflected regional caution ahead of key U.S. inflation data due later in the week, which investors expect to shape central bank policy expectations.
For the year to date, the PSI remains up 3.2%, outperforming some of its southern European peers but trailing the Euro Stoxx 50’s 7.1% gain.
