Peter Thiel acquires 1% stake in Argentina’s Vista Energy

Billionaire investor Peter Thiel has acquired a 1% stake in Vista Energy, an Argentine oil and gas producer, through his investment vehicle Thiel Capital.

The transaction, disclosed in a regulatory filing, values the stake at approximately $10 million based on Vista Energy’s current market capitalization. Thiel Capital did not disclose the timing of the purchase or whether additional investments are planned.

Vista Energy, headquartered in Buenos Aires, operates primarily in Argentina’s Vaca Muerta shale formation, one of the world’s largest unconventional oil and gas reserves. The company’s shares are listed on the Buenos Aires Stock Exchange, where they have traded under the ticker VIST.

The investment reflects growing interest in Latin American energy assets amid shifting global supply dynamics and rising commodity prices. Argentina’s energy sector has sought foreign capital to develop its vast shale resources, though regulatory and macroeconomic challenges persist.

Thiel, co-founder of Palantir Technologies and a prominent venture capitalist, has historically focused on technology and early-stage investments. His entry into the energy sector marks a diversification of his portfolio into traditional industries.

Vista Energy did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the investment or its operational outlook.
