OpenAI’s advertising unit has surpassed $1 billion in annualized revenue, according to internal figures cited in company materials. The milestone comes roughly seven months after the business launched, following the rollout of ChatGPT Ads in the U.S. in February.
The revenue run rate reflects OpenAI’s rapid monetization of its user base, which now exceeds 1 billion weekly active users. Advertisements are displayed to both paid subscribers and free-tier users, with the latter comprising the majority of the platform’s audience. OpenAI has implemented measures to maintain transparency, including clear labeling of ads and restrictions preventing advertisers from accessing user conversations.
Geographic expansion is accelerating, with ChatGPT Ads now available in over 40 countries. The company has extended self-service access to additional markets, including India, Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. OpenAI has also outlined plans to introduce new ad formats, objectives, purchasing options, and measurement tools, alongside enhanced ways for businesses to engage with consumers within the ChatGPT ecosystem.
The revenue milestone arrives as OpenAI prepares for an initial public offering, a process that may require the company to justify its $852 billion valuation to prospective investors. The advertising business represents a key pillar of OpenAI’s commercial strategy, complementing its core AI product offerings.
Competitive pressure is evident, with rival Anthropic featuring OpenAI’s advertising approach in its first Super Bowl campaign, signaling the strategic importance of monetization in the generative AI sector.
