The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened an engineering analysis on Friday into nearly 1 million General Motors pickup trucks and SUVs over concerns about persistent engine failures.
The investigation covers 997,743 vehicles from model years 2021 through 2026, including the Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, and GMC Yukon. The probe follows 499 complaints received by the NHTSA alleging engine failures despite GM's earlier recall remedy for the issue.
The affected vehicles are equipped with GM's L87 engines. The Detroit automaker initiated a recall last year addressing the initial engine failure problem, attributing the issue to a supplier. The NHTSA's engineering analysis aims to evaluate the effectiveness of GM's previous fixes and assess whether a broader safety defect exists.
The regulator's probe represents a formal step beyond preliminary evaluations and could lead to additional recalls if systemic problems are identified. GM has not issued a public response regarding the new investigation.
