NextNav Inc. (NASDAQ: NN) and Tiami Networks announced a collaboration to develop 5G-powered counter unmanned aircraft system (counter-UAS) detection solutions, leveraging NextNav’s ground-based 5G PNT (Positioning, Navigation, and Timing) Network.
The partnership integrates Tiami’s radio frequency sensing technology with NextNav’s licensed Lower 900 MHz band spectrum, enabling long-range, wide-area airspace monitoring. The initiative will use NextNav’s 5G PNT Network in Santa Clara County, California, as a testbed to evaluate 900 MHz-based sensing capabilities, airspace awareness, and counter-UAS detection while providing 3D positioning, navigation, and timing data.
NextNav, headquartered in Reston, Virginia, specializes in terrestrial positioning services, while Tiami Networks focuses on integrated sensing and communications technologies for wireless networks. The collaboration aims to address growing concerns over drone threats to critical infrastructure, large-scale events, and government facilities, including airports.
David Gell, Vice President of Business Development at NextNav, emphasized the urgency of extended situational awareness, stating that drones increasingly pose risks to high-security areas. Dr. Amitav Mukherjee, CEO of Tiami Networks, highlighted NextNav’s 5G PNT Network as a platform to demonstrate how 5G infrastructure can support positioning, timing, and sensing capabilities.
NextNav’s stock closed at $15.79 on Monday, down $1.76, or 10.03%, before the announcement. After-hours trading showed a gain of $0.31, or 1.96%, to $16.10.
