Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) held a videoconference on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, to assess allied contributions for supporting freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, NATO’s top commander confirmed.
General Alexus Grynkewich, U.S. Air Force General and NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe, convened the meeting at the chief-of-defense level with interested allies to evaluate available resources. The initiative is not a NATO mission but leverages the alliance’s organizational framework to facilitate coordination among member states.
The Strait of Hormuz, which carries approximately one-fifth of globally traded oil, has faced recurring disruptions in recent years. NATO members have sought to avoid direct involvement in the Iran conflict while developing plans outside the alliance framework to reopen the strait. The meeting follows ongoing efforts to ensure the security of a critical maritime chokepoint amid regional tensions.
