MUFG to pilot blockchain-based JGB settlement in real time
Japan’s largest bank will test real-time blockchain settlement for Japanese government bond trades using the Canton network, aiming to enhance efficiency in debt markets.

Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG) will conduct a proof-of-concept for real-time settlement of Japanese government bond (JGB) transactions using blockchain technology.
The pilot, slated for later this year, will leverage the Canton network, a privacy-focused blockchain infrastructure developed by Digital Asset Holdings. The initiative aims to streamline post-trade processes in Japan’s JGB market, where settlement typically occurs with a one-day lag.
Real-time settlement could reduce counterparty risk, lower operational costs and improve liquidity by accelerating transaction finality. The JGB market, one of the world’s largest debt markets, currently relies on traditional, batch-based settlement systems managed by the Bank of Japan and the Japan Securities Depository Center.
MUFG’s move aligns with broader efforts by Japanese financial institutions to adopt distributed ledger technology (DLT) for capital markets. The bank has previously explored blockchain applications, including tokenized asset experiments and cross-border payments.
Industry analysts note that while blockchain offers potential efficiency gains, regulatory and scalability challenges remain. Japan’s Financial Services Agency has signaled openness to DLT adoption but maintains strict oversight on financial market infrastructure.
The proof-of-concept will test the feasibility of integrating blockchain with existing JGB settlement frameworks, with results expected to inform future policy and infrastructure decisions.
