Mobiliar Posts $447 Million H1 Profit, More Than Doubles After Landslide Hit

Mobiliar reported first-half net profit of 446.7 million Swiss francs, up sharply from 169.9 million francs a year earlier, as the cooperative insurer benefited from lower catastrophe costs and strong financial-market returns.

The financial result climbed 77 percent year-over-year to 474.2 million francs, driven primarily by realized gains from the sale of investments, including gold. Additional contributions came from the MobiFonds Swiss Property initial public offering and an improved foreign-exchange outcome.

The recovery followed a difficult prior-year period marked by the devastating rockslide in Blatten, a village in the canton of Valais, which alone cost Mobiliar approximately 140 million francs in claims.

Insurance operations also posted solid results. Groupwide gross premium income rose 3.6 percent to 3.79 billion francs, with non-life business accounting for the bulk at 3.18 billion francs, a gain of 4.9 percent. The non-life segment's underwriting profit jumped to 345.7 million francs from 135.6 million francs a year earlier, supported by markedly lower weather-catastrophe losses. The loss ratio improved by 6.3 percentage points to 100.6 percent.

Hailstorms at the end of August are expected to weigh on the second-half balance sheet. As of last week, Mobiliar had received roughly 18,000 claims related to the storms, the majority involving damaged vehicles.

"We were able to close the first half of our anniversary year with pleasing premium growth that once again exceeded the market average," said Mobiliar CEO Michèle Rodoni, noting that the company strengthened its market position and improved profitability.

In life insurance, where the business is smaller, gross premiums fell 2.8 percent to 604.1 million francs. Private-pension periodic premiums grew 2.7 percent, remaining above market rates. In the occupational-pension segment, Mobiliar prioritized portfolio profitability over growth in a highly competitive market, allowing premium volume to decline. The life segment's profit rose to 79.2 million francs from 29.5 million francs in the first half of 2025, helped by the strong financial result.
