MMG’s shares advanced nearly 3% on Monday as the company’s Las Bambas copper mine in Peru resumed operations following a two-day shutdown prompted by a fatal accident that killed two workers.
The mine, MMG’s largest producing asset, halted production on August 19 after the incident, but operations resumed by August 21. The brief closure underscores ongoing safety concerns at the site, which investors typically weigh in their assessments of operational risk.
Las Bambas is a critical component of MMG’s copper output guidance, which targets 380,000 to 400,000 tonnes annually by 2026. The mine’s performance remains closely monitored amid broader market volatility, with the Hang Seng Index declining 2% during the same session.
While the resumption of operations signals a return to normalcy, safety incidents of this nature often temper institutional investor sentiment in the near term.
