A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck near the east coast of Japan's Honshu island on Sunday, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
The quake occurred at a depth of 78 kilometers, the GFZ said in a seismic bulletin. The temblor was centered off the coast of Honshu, Japan's main island, where seismic activity is monitored closely due to the country's position along the Pacific Ring of Fire.
The event was logged at 15:20 local time and updated one minute later, according to the publication timestamp. The GFZ, based in Potsdam, Germany, provides global seismic monitoring data used by governments and research institutions.
There were no immediate reports of damage, injuries or tsunami warnings following the tremor. Japan's meteorological agency typically issues alerts within minutes of significant seismic events, though no advisories had been published as of the latest update.
