A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck northern Tibet on Thursday night, local time, at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to seismic monitoring data. The tremor’s epicenter was located hundreds of kilometers north of the Himalayan regions in Nepal and China that were devastated by a deadly flash flood earlier in the week.
Chinese authorities reported the quake occurred in northern Tibet, while the China Earthquake Networks Center recorded a separate magnitude 4.7 tremor in Nagqu, Tibet, on Wednesday. Both events were documented by the Xinhua state news agency.
The seismic activity follows a catastrophic flash flood that struck parts of Nepal and China on Wednesday, resulting in hundreds of fatalities and leaving more than 1,000 people missing. In response, China activated a Level IV flood emergency response plan in Tibet, citing risks posed by a potential barrier lake breach. The Chinese Ministry of Water Resources dispatched a technical team to Gyirong County to assess the situation and monitor rainfall levels.
The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) provided additional seismic data supporting the reported magnitudes and locations of the tremors.
