Interactive Brokers (IBKR) reported an addition of 143,000 customer accounts in August, raising its total to 5.46 million, up 35% from a year earlier, according to the firm’s September 1 metrics update. The growth puts the broker within reach of a round‑number milestone.
Analyst calculations show that reaching 6 million accounts by December 31, 2026 requires an average monthly increase of about 135,000 accounts – roughly 2.4% growth per month over the final four months of the year. The firm has already exceeded that pace, adding more than 600,000 accounts from April through August, an average of 150,000 per month, and August’s 143,000 additions were above the required monthly rate.
If the broker maintains even a modest slowdown from its summer momentum, the 6‑million target remains attainable. Since entering 2026 with roughly 4.4 million accounts, Interactive Brokers has posted monthly growth rates ranging from 2.2% to 3.8%, according to the analyst’s calculations. Year‑over‑year account growth rose from 31% in February to 35% by August.
CEO Milan Galik highlighted the firm’s global expansion during the second‑quarter earnings call in July, noting growth across all regions and account types, including financial advisors, introducing brokers, and direct accounts. He also pointed to a streak of double‑digit integrations of introducing brokers, marking the fourth or fifth consecutive quarter of such activity.
The forecast is not without risk. Growth slowed to 2.2%‑2.4% per month between February and April, and a sustained rate at the lower end would leave the year‑end total just under 6 million. December’s 2% month‑over‑month increase, if repeated for four months, would result in a total near 5.9 million accounts.
Overall, Interactive Brokers’ account‑growth trajectory suggests the 6‑million benchmark is plausible, provided the firm can sustain its recent acceleration and avoid prolonged periods of slower expansion.
