India’s infrastructure output grew 5.4% year-on-year in July, marking a deceleration from the revised 6% expansion recorded in June, government data showed.
The latest figures, released under a revised series with 2022-23 as the base year, reflect a shift from the prior 2011-12 base and an expanded basket of nine industries, including the addition of iron ore. The government revised the June growth figure to 6% from an initial estimate, while July’s figure fell short of expectations tied to the prior month’s momentum.
Sectoral performance varied, with cement output rising 13.1% in July, up from a revised 9.9% increase in June. Steel production grew 2.9%, easing from a 5.6% rise in the prior month. Electricity generation expanded 9%, down from an 11.4% increase in June, while coal production advanced 7.6%, compared with a 1.4% rise in June.
The moderation in iron ore and electricity output contributed to the overall slowdown in infrastructure growth. The revised series, introduced last month, provides a more current benchmark for tracking industrial activity in India’s expanding economy.
