India's food safety regulator, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), has initiated legal proceedings against Nestlé India over alleged violations of product-labeling requirements and quality standards for infant formula, the agency said in a social-media post.
Nestlé India's stock dropped 2.5% following the announcement. The company did not immediately return a request for comment.
The FSSAI said its investigation targeted infant formula products and advertising materials sold on e-commerce platforms. Inspectors found that labeling on NAN Excella Pro Stage 1 and Lactogen Pro 1 did not comply with regulations governing the marketing of baby food.
Separate laboratory tests also detected insufficient biotin levels in a sample of follow-on milk formula, a reference lab confirmed that the statutory requirements for infant formula were not met.
The enforcement action comes against a backdrop of tightening oversight by Indian regulators. Authorities have increasingly intensified monitoring of food-safety standards, product labeling and advertising claims in recent years, with particular focus on packaged foods and infant nutrition products.
