GlobalFoundries has introduced process design kits (PDKs) for its UX platform family, enabling customers to develop chips for edge devices and sensing systems. The announcement was made at the company’s annual Technology Summit in North America.
The UX platform family includes the 40UX and 22UX technologies, both designed for ultra-low power applications. The 40UX platform targets microcontrollers, wireless connectivity devices, sensor interfaces, imaging systems and edge AI applications. It is built on GlobalFoundries’ 40nm platform, which has shipped over one million wafers to date. The 22UX platform offers a 22nm solution for edge AI, imaging and mixed-signal systems, featuring ultra-low power operation and low-noise analog components.
Volume production for the 40UX platform is scheduled to begin in 2027 at the company’s Singapore facility, with additional capacity planned for its Malta, New York site. The 22UX platform will be manufactured at GlobalFoundries’ Dresden, Germany facility. Both platforms will also be accessible through the company’s GlobalShuttle multi-project wafer program, with quarterly shuttles available through 2027.
Ed Kaste, senior vice president of GlobalFoundries’ CMOS business, highlighted the growing demand for power efficiency and integration in edge devices. “Intelligence is moving into more of the devices people and businesses rely on every day, creating new demands for power efficiency, precise sensing, connectivity and cost-effective integration,” he said.
