Germany has become the first civil government in the world to acquire Planet Labs' dedicated Constellation Services, signing a contract with a maximum possible value of €25 million over five years that includes options, the companies said Monday.
The agreement, signed between Planet Labs Germany and the German Federal Ministry of the Interior, will see the Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy (BKG) coordinate and distribute high-resolution tasked imagery, nationwide Planet Mosaics, and geospatial analytics to German civil government authorities.
"By securing exclusive access to dedicated satellite tasking for the first time at the federal civil level, Germany is taking a decisive step toward establishing future-ready space capabilities," said Prof. Dr. Steffen Schön, president of BKG.
Planet will deliver a cloud-native software-as-a-service and platform solution deployed on European cloud infrastructure to comply with data privacy regulations and information security standards.
Since 2021, Planet's satellite data has supported more than 400 federal institutions across Germany, serving sectors including urban planning, forest and water monitoring, and agricultural and land-use assessments.
The company's European headquarters has been based in Berlin for over a decade, and it is moving into a new facility later this fall. The new location is designed to house satellite manufacturing, engineering, mission operations, data processing, and business operations.
The announcement does not change Planet's previously issued financial guidance for the current fiscal year, provided on September 3, 2026. Planet Labs PBC (NYSE:PL) did not provide additional financial details about the contract's payment schedule or the scope of the included options.
