European Union naval forces operating under Operation EUNAVFOR MED Irini boarded an oil tanker in the Mediterranean on August 30, citing suspected violations of international maritime law.
The vessel, identified as the MV SUN, was boarded for flag verification purposes, according to an announcement by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday. The boarding follows reports that the tanker may be part of Russia’s shadow fleet and operating under a false flag.
Operation EUNAVFOR MED Irini, established in 2020, was originally tasked with enforcing a United Nations arms embargo on Libya. The EU subsequently expanded the mission’s mandate to include verification boardings of vessels suspected of violating international maritime regulations.
The boarding of the MV SUN represents an escalation in the EU’s enforcement actions targeting vessels linked to Russia’s oil trade amid ongoing sanctions pressures.
