EnerSys earnings preview: Margin resilience tested after cost cuts
Industrial battery maker EnerSys reports Q4 results Thursday; analysts assess whether efficiency gains from restructuring can offset softer demand and input costs.

EnerSys, a global provider of stored energy solutions for industrial applications, is scheduled to release its fourth-quarter fiscal 2024 earnings on Thursday after the market close. Investors will scrutinize the report for signs of margin durability following a year of aggressive cost-reduction measures aimed at stabilizing profitability amid uneven demand.
The Horsham, Pennsylvania-based company has implemented restructuring initiatives across its manufacturing footprint, including plant consolidations and workforce adjustments, to counterbalance pricing pressures in key end markets such as telecommunications and data centers. These actions were designed to offset higher raw material costs, particularly for lead and lithium, which have weighed on gross margins in recent quarters.
Analysts at Jefferies, in a note published Wednesday, highlighted EnerSys’s ability to protect margins as a critical test for the stock’s near-term trajectory. They estimate adjusted earnings per share of $1.85 for the quarter, down 5% year-over-year but in line with consensus. Revenue is projected to decline 3% to $820 million, reflecting softer order intake and delayed project timelines in its motive power segment, which serves forklift and material handling equipment.
The company’s energy systems division, which supplies batteries for renewable energy storage and backup power, has shown more resilience but faces its own headwinds from competitive pricing and supply chain volatility. EnerSys has guided for modest growth in this segment, though macroeconomic uncertainty—particularly in Europe and Asia—remains a risk to volume forecasts.
Investor focus will also extend to management’s commentary on inventory levels and pricing power, as well as the sustainability of the cost cuts implemented over the past year. EnerSys has not provided formal guidance for fiscal 2025, but analysts expect a cautious outlook given ongoing geopolitical tensions and fluctuating commodity prices.
Shares of EnerSys have underperformed the S&P 500 Industrials index by approximately 8% over the past 12 months, reflecting broader investor skepticism about near-term growth prospects despite the company’s cost discipline. The stock closed at $89.45 on Wednesday, near the midpoint of its 52-week range of $78.50 to $102.30.
