European Central Bank Chief Economist Philip Lane said on Tuesday that the 3% inflation rate in the euro zone remains too high, underscoring the need for continued restrictive monetary policy.
Lane, speaking in Ireland, noted that while inflation has eased significantly from double-digit levels reached in 2022, the current rate still exceeds the ECB’s 2% target by one percentage point. His remarks highlight the central bank’s cautious stance amid persistent price pressures.
The ECB has maintained a restrictive policy stance in recent quarters to bring inflation sustainably back to target. Lane’s comments suggest policymakers remain vigilant about inflation dynamics, even as the broader disinflation trend continues across the euro area.
The remarks come as the ECB assesses economic conditions and the appropriate pace of policy normalization. Market participants will closely monitor further guidance from ECB officials in the coming weeks.
