Decentralized finance lending protocol Compound is allocating $52 million and assembling a new leadership team as part of a strategic shift toward institutional clients. The move follows a sustained decline in assets locked on the platform, which peaked five years ago before retail trader interest waned.
Compound, which pioneered on-chain lending and borrowing, has seen its total value locked (TVL) decline significantly from prior highs. The protocol’s focus on decentralized governance and permissionless access had previously attracted a broad base of retail users, but engagement has since tapered off amid broader market consolidation and reduced risk appetite in DeFi.
To address the shift in demand, Compound’s new leadership team will prioritize institutional partnerships, including banks, asset managers, and corporate treasuries. The $52 million allocation will fund product development, compliance infrastructure, and direct outreach to potential institutional clients. The funds will be deployed over the next 18 months, with a portion earmarked for expanding collateral options and improving risk management tools tailored to institutional requirements.
The protocol’s governance token, COMP, has seen its market capitalization and trading volume decline in parallel with the drop in TVL. The new leadership, led by a former traditional finance executive with experience in structured credit, aims to bridge the gap between DeFi’s transparency and institutional risk controls. The team includes specialists in regulatory compliance and enterprise-grade technology integration.
Analysts note that Compound’s pivot reflects a broader trend among DeFi protocols seeking to reconcile decentralized infrastructure with institutional adoption. While some protocols have succeeded in attracting institutional capital, others have struggled to balance decentralization with the stringent requirements of regulated entities. The success of Compound’s strategy will depend on its ability to deliver scalable solutions that meet institutional standards without compromising core DeFi principles.
