Canada’s government committed C$195 million to Xanadu Quantum Technologies to advance quantum manufacturing under Project OPTIMISM, completing the federal portion of up to C$390 million in total funding announced in March 2026.
The funds will be used to develop domestic production capabilities for photonic quantum computing components, including heterogeneous photonic chip integration, photonic integrated circuit packaging, wafer-level semiconductor testing, and quantum module assembly. Xanadu, founded in 2016 and listed on public markets, said these capabilities could extend beyond quantum computing to telecommunications, AI hardware, and sensing technologies.
The investment, described as the largest quantum manufacturing commitment in Canadian history, follows a March announcement outlining the broader C$390 million funding framework. Xanadu’s CEO, Dr. Christian Weedbrook, called the agreement a milestone for Canada’s quantum ambitions, emphasizing the need for specialized manufacturing to scale utility-grade quantum computers.
Canada’s Minister of Industry, Mélanie Joly, framed the funding as a driver for job creation, economic sovereignty, and industrial development. The project targets the development of a domestic supply chain for advanced photonic technologies, positioning Canada as a leader in next-generation computing and related sectors.
