Canada’s federal government will provide C$195 million in financing to Xanadu Quantum Technologies for the construction of a photonic components manufacturing plant in Toronto, marking the largest single government commitment to quantum technology in the country.
The loan, equivalent to approximately $141 million at current exchange rates, will enable Xanadu to scale production of light-based components used in its quantum computing systems. The Toronto facility will focus on photonic manufacturing, a key enabler for the company’s room-temperature quantum computers, which operate without the extreme cooling required by many rival systems.
Xanadu disclosed in March that the federal loan represents the first tranche of up to C$390 million in potential government funding. The company expects to finalize a separate agreement with Ontario’s provincial government for the remaining C$195 million in the near term. Terms of the federal loan were not disclosed.
The announcement follows heightened global competition in quantum computing, including a recent U.S. initiative under the Trump administration to allocate $2 billion in equity stakes across nine companies to bolster domestic leadership in the sector. Xanadu, founded in 2016, has yet to commercialize its quantum systems, which remain susceptible to errors due to environmental disturbances such as sound.
The plant will serve as a critical production hub for Xanadu’s photonic components, positioning Canada as a key player in the emerging quantum hardware supply chain.
