Brazil's power demand is expected to rise 5.9% year-over-year in September to an average of 85,118 megawatts, the National Electric System Operator (ONS) projected on Friday.
Hydropower inflows, a key driver of generation, are forecast to diverge significantly by region. The South is projected to receive 199% of its historical average rainfall, while the Southeast/Center-West is expected to see inflows near the norm at 97%. The Northeast and North regions, however, are estimated to receive just 67% and 52% of their historical averages, respectively.
The main reservoirs, concentrated in the Southeast/Center-West subsystem, are anticipated to end September at 55% of capacity, according to the ONS forecast. The operator's projections come as Brazil's energy sector navigates seasonal demand patterns and regional hydrological variability.
