Brazil's benchmark Bovespa index advanced 0.06% at the close of trade in São Paulo on Thursday, as gains in basic materials, electric power and telecommunications offset broader weakness.
Advancing issues trailed decliners by 581 to 383 on the B3 exchange, with 37 stocks ending flat. The CBOE Brazil ETF Volatility Index, which tracks implied volatility for Bovespa options, rose 4.08% to 27.28.
Minerva SA led the day's advancers, climbing 7.00% to 3.82 after adding 0.25 points. Marcopolo SA followed with a 6.46% gain to 4.47, while SLC Agricola SA advanced 5.72% to 15.15 in late trade.
Decliners included Grupo Vamos SA, which dropped 8.49% to 2.48, marking all-time lows for the company. Hapvida Participacoes e Investimentos fell 7.16% to 6.11, also hitting 52-week lows, while Cury Construtora e Incorporadora declined 4.77% to 30.02.
The U.S. dollar strengthened 0.39% against the Brazilian real to 5.19, while the euro rose 0.36% to 6.07. The U.S. Dollar Index futures were up 0.08% at 98.81.
Commodities showed mixed performance, with gold futures for December delivery up 0.69% at $4,576.46 per troy ounce and crude oil for October delivery rising 2.58% to $86.57 per barrel. December coffee futures edged up 0.03% to $328.30.
