BP PLC appointed Ian Tyler as permanent chairman on Wednesday, following a board-led search that considered both internal and external candidates. The appointment takes effect immediately.
Tyler succeeds Albert Manifold, who was removed by the board in 2026 amid governance and conduct concerns. Amanda Blanc, BP’s senior independent director and a key figure in the leadership transition, will not seek re-election at next year’s annual general meeting and will depart once a successor is appointed.
Tyler, who joined BP’s board as a non-executive director in April 2025, has served as interim chairman since May 26, 2026. The board cited his experience in providing oversight and governance to executive teams as a factor in his selection. Blanc, who played a central role in appointing both Manifold and Tyler, praised his leadership during his interim tenure.
Tyler brings extensive non-executive experience across listed and private companies in oil and gas, natural resources, and engineering. He currently chairs Grafton Group, a building materials firm, and serves as senior independent director of mining company Anglo American. His prior roles include chairing Cairn Energy and serving as a non-executive director at BAE Systems, where he worked with more than 15 chief executives over his career.
Blanc’s departure follows the board’s decision to address governance issues linked to Manifold’s tenure. The transition process underscores BP’s focus on strengthening oversight and leadership stability amid evolving market conditions in the energy sector.
