Amazon Web Services (AWS) has agreed to acquire DuckLabs, the Amsterdam-based company behind the open-source analytical database DuckDB, as the cloud giant moves to enhance its data analytics offerings.
The acquisition, announced on Wednesday, will see the DuckLabs team—including co-founders Hannes Mühleisen and Mark Raasveldt—join AWS upon completion of the deal. AWS and DuckLabs have collaborated since 2024, integrating DuckDB into AWS services, including Amazon Athena and Redshift, to improve query performance and cost efficiency for customers.
AWS emphasized that the transaction is not an acquisition of the DuckDB open-source project itself. The project will remain under the governance of the independent DuckDB Foundation and continue to operate under the MIT license, ensuring its free and open-source status. AWS has stated that the DuckDB team will retain responsibility for the project’s technical direction.
Andy Warfield, Amazon vice president and distinguished engineer, said the collaboration with DuckLabs over the past two years has reinforced the value of their work. “For almost a decade, the DuckDB team has worked on building a tool that lets people work with data with confidence,” Warfield said in a statement. “We’ve been working closely with the DuckLabs team for the past two years, and I am so excited at the opportunity to work with them even more closely.”
The deal is expected to close shortly, subject to customary closing conditions. AWS did not disclose financial terms of the acquisition.
