An Austrian investor has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison following a partially reopened trial at the Landesgericht Innsbruck, which found that the defendant had harmed his creditors through fraudulent conduct.
René Benko, the 49-year-old founder and majority owner of the Signa Group, was convicted after the court determined that he had made false statements in a shareholder meeting that contributed to losses suffered by creditors.
The Innsbruck regional court ruled that the evidence established Benko's liability for damaging creditor interests through the misrepresentation of the company's financial position during shareholder communications.
Signa Group, which holds some of Europe's most prominent commercial real estate assets, has faced mounting legal and financial pressures as it restructures amid broader market turbulence. Benko built the empire from Vienna-based holdings into one of the continent's largest private property groups before accounting irregularities and debt concerns triggered a prolonged crisis.
