Australian stocks fall 0.8% as S&P/ASX 200 ends lower
The S&P/ASX 200 index declined 0.80% on Wednesday, reflecting broad-based losses across key sectors.

Australian equities retreated on Wednesday, with the S&P/ASX 200 index closing 0.80% lower at 7,850.20 points. The decline extended losses from the prior session, as investors weighed mixed corporate earnings and cautious macroeconomic signals.
The benchmark index tracked regional peers lower, with losses concentrated in the materials and financial sectors. Miners led declines, pressured by weaker iron ore prices, while banks underperformed amid profit-taking after recent gains. The energy sector also weighed on the index, as oil prices slipped on demand concerns.
Traders cited profit-taking following a strong start to the year as a key factor behind the pullback. The Australian dollar remained relatively stable against the U.S. dollar, though it did little to offset broader risk-off sentiment in global markets.
The S&P/ASX 200 has now fallen for three consecutive sessions, erasing some of the gains recorded in early January. Market participants will monitor upcoming economic data and earnings reports for further direction.
