Australia's benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index declined 0.98% at Thursday's close in Sydney, weighed by losses in technology and consumer discretionary stocks.
The index ended the session with 720 decliners against 394 advancers, while 396 issues were unchanged. Implied volatility, as measured by the S&P/ASX 200 VIX, rose 1.47% to 10.74.
Gold futures for December delivery advanced 0.25% to $4,664.89 per troy ounce, extending gains toward record territory. In contrast, crude oil benchmarks fell. October West Texas Intermediate dropped 1.11% to $81.32 per barrel, while November Brent crude declined 1.10% to $85.98 per barrel.
Among top performers, Ramsay Health Care surged 14.06% to 50.21, marking a 52-week high. Summerset Group Holdings added 10.85% to 7.15, and Domino's Pizza Enterprises rose 7.71% to 20.25. The gains followed sector-specific momentum in healthcare and food retail.
Heavy losses were concentrated in Objective Corp, which tumbled 16.49% to 6.23, extending a multi-day slide to five-year lows. Generation Development Group fell 15.89% to 3.23, while Magellan Financial Group dropped 13.39% to 9.57.
The Australian dollar held steady against the U.S. dollar, with AUD/USD flat at 0.72. The currency strengthened 0.21% against the yen to 114.51, while the U.S. Dollar Index futures slipped 0.01% to 99.08.
The mixed session reflected sector rotation amid thin liquidity typical of late August, with investors balancing commodity-linked gains against broader equity weakness.
