Anthropic secures $9 bln AI compute deal with Riot Blockchain

Anthropic has finalized a $9 billion agreement with Riot Blockchain for 191 megawatts of computing capacity at the latter’s Rockdale, Texas facility, according to a report.

The deal, valued at $9 billion, represents one of the largest infrastructure commitments in the artificial intelligence sector and underscores the accelerating demand for high-performance compute resources. The capacity will be sourced from Riot’s Rockdale campus, a site previously focused on Bitcoin mining that is being repurposed to support AI workloads.

Riot Blockchain, a publicly traded Bitcoin miner, has been expanding its operations beyond cryptocurrency to include AI infrastructure, aligning with broader industry shifts toward diversified revenue streams. The company’s Rockdale facility, located in Texas, is among the largest Bitcoin mining operations in North America.

Anthropic, a leading AI research and deployment firm, has not publicly confirmed the terms of the agreement. The company has been rapidly scaling its compute infrastructure to meet the needs of its growing customer base, including enterprise clients and developers utilizing its large language models.

The deal follows a series of high-value compute agreements in the AI sector, reflecting the intense competition among technology firms to secure sufficient power and hardware to train and deploy advanced AI systems. Riot’s entry into AI infrastructure highlights the convergence of traditional mining operations and emerging AI workloads, particularly in regions with abundant and affordable energy resources.
