Artificial intelligence developer Anthropic is preparing for a record-breaking initial public offering that could exceed $86 billion in capital raised, according to a report citing The Information.
The company, known for its Claude AI models, is targeting a valuation between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion, which would place it among the largest IPOs in history. The filing is scheduled for after Labor Day, with an investor day planned for mid-September and the IPO expected in late September or early October.
A key feature of the offering is an unusual structure allowing existing shareholders and early investors to sell some of their holdings directly in the IPO through a structured secondary tranche. This approach aims to let insiders realize gains while prioritizing allocations to long-term investors. Anthropic is also considering extending the standard 180-day lockup period for at least some shareholders to mitigate concerns about insider selling and potential supply overhang.
The company's financial projections indicate substantial revenue growth, with anticipated revenue reaching approximately $190 billion to $200 billion by 2028. Anthropic recently secured a $45 billion, six-year agreement to rent AI computing power from Nscale's West Virginia data center campus, which underpins the unprecedented capital raise expected in the IPO.
