Allergan Aesthetics, a subsidiary of AbbVie (NYSE: ABBV), presented findings from two clinical studies on September 17 at the Science of Skin Summit in Austin, Texas, evaluating targeted skincare and noninvasive dermabrasion approaches in individuals using medical weight-loss medications.
The first study, a 12-week trial, assessed a daily skincare regimen consisting of a growth factor serum, neck cream, and body lotion. Nine participants completed the study. Statistically significant investigator-assessed improvements were observed across measures including dryness, skin tone evenness, crepiness, tactile roughness, lines and wrinkles, and skin texture on the face, neck, upper inner arms, and distal thighs, with early signs noted as far back as week two. Participants reported that their facial skin appeared approximately 10 years younger after four weeks of twice-daily application of the growth factor serum.
The second study, a six-week evaluation, examined DiamondGlow dermabrasion treatments combined with a concurrent skincare regimen. Eleven participants completed at least one post-treatment assessment. Improvements were visible immediately following treatment sessions, and participants reported that facial skin appeared approximately 7.5 years younger after three DiamondGlow treatments alongside the six-week skincare protocol. Findings were presented as e-posters at the summit, which runs through September 20.
"These early data contribute clinical evidence evaluating targeted skincare and noninvasive dermabrasion approaches in individuals taking medical weight loss medications," said Elizabeth Makino, director of clinical development and global scientific affairs at Allergan Aesthetics. The studies focused on patients using GLP-1 receptor agonists, a class of drugs that has driven substantial growth in the weight-loss treatment market in recent years.
Both trials were small and open-label in design, and the data were shared in poster format rather than peer-reviewed publication. Allergan Aesthetics is headquartered in Irvine, California.
