Global digital engineering consultancy Akkodis and fuel cell manufacturer EKPO Fuel Cell Technologies have moved hydrogen fuel cell technology from the test bench to commercial logistics operations by integrating EKPO’s NM20 stack into a hydrogen-powered heavy-duty truck.
Akkodis is responsible for developing the complete fuel cell propulsion system, including architecture, high-voltage integration, control software and thermal management, while EKPO provides the NM20 stack and technical expertise. The partnership targets the demanding requirements of heavy-duty transport, where performance, efficiency and reliability under variable load profiles, gradients and temperature conditions can only be fully assessed in real-world operation.
The demonstration vehicle serves as a mobile validation platform, collecting operational data that will inform future iterations of fuel cell systems and hydrogen-based drivetrains. Akkodis said the project underscores its capability to integrate disparate technologies—hardware, software, power electronics and thermal systems—into a cohesive, functional whole.
EKPO’s NM20 stack, designed for high-power heavy-duty applications, delivers up to 400 kW and is rated for more than 25,000 operating hours. In the truck, a single stack configuration achieves system output of up to 360 kW with peak efficiencies approaching 61 percent. The initiative is supported by the European IPCEI funding program, which promotes strategic hydrogen projects.
Beyond the immediate application, the partners aim to establish a data-driven foundation for integrating high-performance fuel cell systems into broader vehicle classes and stationary power, marine and off-highway equipment. The real-world deployment is expected to yield insights into system control, fault tolerance and lifecycle performance under commercial operating conditions.
