Avio Posts H1 2026 Growth Amid Stock Decline

Avio reported strong first-half 2026 results, with revenue rising 18% year-over-year to EUR 279.7 million, driven by a combination of defense contracts and launch system demand. EBITDA expanded to EUR 12 million, up from EUR 10 million in the same period of 2025, with net income reaching EUR 9 million, bolstered by financial income and fair-value adjustments. The company maintained a backlog exceeding EUR 2 billion, with 33% from defense and 70% from production contracts, including orders for launch systems and satellite missions.

The company’s stock declined 2.74% in trading, closing at $28.01 after falling 20.6% from its 52-week high of $52.41. Despite this, Avio’s financial position remains robust, with a net financial position of EUR 535 million, though it has shrunk from EUR 595 million at year-end 2025 due to higher capital expenditures and working capital adjustments. A EUR 110 million investment from private equity firm Advent Capital, at EUR 33.40 per share, further strengthened its capital structure, with total private equity funding over the prior nine months exceeding EUR 500 million.

The company’s growth trajectory is underpinned by a four-year streak of double-digit annual revenue and profit growth, with CEO Giulio Ranzo emphasizing the consistency of its performance. New orders totaled EUR 160 million in H1 2026, split evenly between defense and launch systems, with an additional EUR 60 million booked in early July. Defense contracts, including a EUR 35 million order from MBDA for the European Aster 30 missile system, contributed to this momentum.

Avio’s expansion into the U.S. market is accelerating, with a groundbreaking scheduled for late June 2026 and a EUR 97 million incentive package from the Commonwealth of Virginia potentially available. The company has also redeployed about EUR 8 million (20% of reported EBITDA) toward U.S. capability development, including the acquisition of approximately 1,200 acres of industrial land in Virginia. Production targets for 2026 include 7 to 8 Ariane flights and 3 Vega launches, with medium-term goals of 6 Vega flights and 12 Ariane 6 flights annually. Vega launch capacity is expected to exceed 35 units per year, while Ariane 6 and P160 booster production will also ramp up.

The company’s focus on satellite and launch systems is expanding beyond Europe, with upcoming missions for the European Commission and European Space Agency. The IRIDE constellation’s first launch is scheduled for December 2026, followed by additional flights in early 2027. A liquid propulsion prototype was ground-tested in 2026 and is set to fly in 2027. Ranzo noted that demand for solid rocket motors remains outpacing supply, with a gap expected to persist until 2030.

Despite these successes, Avio’s stock has fallen sharply from its 52-week high, reflecting broader market sentiment. Ranzo acknowledged the competitive landscape, noting that the rise of cheaper rideshare missions by SpaceX has reduced demand for smaller customers, pushing them toward European providers. He also highlighted the company’s strategic partnerships, including its collaboration with Advent Capital and the Virginia incentive package, as key drivers of its growth strategy.

Analysts have noted the company’s strong operational execution and strategic positioning in both defense and space launch markets. With a mix of defense contracts, satellite missions, and expansion into new markets, Avio remains well-positioned for continued growth, though its stock performance suggests lingering market uncertainty about its long-term valuation.
